The Trail Blazers initiative has a dual emphasis of both promoting STEM pathways and building the leadership capacity of participants, recognising the importance of preparing youth for the future of work beyond simply the selection of career pathways.

For the participants, Trail Blazers is a unique experience of fun, excitement and inspiration. In a vibrant, collaborative and supportive environment, participants will make new friends, be challenged to step outside their comfort zone, be exposed to outstanding role models, learn new skills, deepen their understanding of STEM, and gain the support of mentors.

The 6 month Trail Blazers Program commences with a six-day residential STEM camp. The camp itinerary is an intensive schedule of workshops, activities and guest speakers that focuses on the themes of leadership development, developing critical thinking skills and exploring problem solving techniques. The Program is facilitated by a team of camp leaders with extensive experience in youth development and are supported by a volunteer support team who oversee camp logistics. Participants also have the opportunity to engage with a range of inspiring speakers from Government and industry.

The Program is open to students in years 7–12 living in the Peel Region of Western Australia and is geared towards young people who are considering a STEM career pathway, or who have been identified by their school as having skills and abilities that would benefit from participation in the Program. Peel Bright Minds works with Peel schools to identify suitable participants.

Participants can also self-select, and there are no minimum academic requirements for participation. The program’s regional focus seeks to address the inherent barriers that exist for young people living in a regional area to access Programs of this nature compared to their urban peers.
Following the camp, participants receive ongoing mentorship and support for the duration of the six-month Program.
